ARTICLE. From the San Mateo County Harbor District August 14th, 2024.
I asked San Mateo County Harbor District consultant, Brad Damitz, about what is happening with the Eel Grass. Specifically, I was wondering, and have been asked, where is the eel grass being stored.
Here is Brad’s answer:
“Eelgrass is not being stored anywhere. Eelgrass needs to be salvaged and transplanted within a day or two, otherwise it may not survive.
They did a small transplanting effort to re-locate the eelgrass that was in the mitigation area now being covered with sand (west basin), and at that time they also transplanted a few eelgrass plants that were found in the dredging area (east basin) being used to supply sediment to the mitigation area.
They set up a station on Johnson Pier with water pumps bringing water up (see attached pic), there they bundle together a few eelgrass plants and tie on to a biodegradable anchor (think popsicle stick) then transplanted those “planting units”.Â
The main transplanting efforts will occur 8/29 – 9/6. This will be salvaged from the dredge area along the east outer breakwater, before they start dredging in the areas where eelgrass exists. Same process, but scaled-up operation, more workers, eelgrass plants, etc.
For more info on the transplanting process you can refer to the PPH Harbor-wide eelgrass Mitigation and Management Plan.
