PRESS RELEASE. From Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (“Midpen Open Space”) on November 10th, 2025. Midpen Board.

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District opened six miles of new trail at the La Honda Creek Open Space Preserve over the weekend on November 8th, 2025.

These new multiuse trails link this vast preserve’s existing trails into one connected network totaling more than 17 miles, and provide new access to the preserve’s central area, and to bicycles on designated trails, for the first time.

Many of the new trails were expertly designed and built by Midpen staff and provide a more remote and challenging trail experience for bicyclists, horseback riders and hikers. The trails pass through redwood forest, oak woodlands, coastal grasslands with panoramic views and areas shared by grazing cattle that are part of Midpen’s Conservation Grazing Program.

The project exemplifies how Midpen balances environmental protection, conservation grazing and ecologically sensitive public access in alignment with its unique mission on the San Mateo County Coastside, where conservation of open space and working agricultural lands go hand-in-hand. These new trails are part of the community-supported, long-term vision for La Honda Creek Preserve, and were completed thanks to local voter support of Measure AA, a 30-year, $300 million general obligation bond passed by voters in 2014.
