Caltrans is proceeding with the major Multi-Asset Roadway Rehabilitation Project along Highway 1, extending from Moss Beach through Half Moon Bay. This extensive two-year project will upgrade critical roadway infrastructure, enhance safety, and improve access for all users traveling the coast.

We strongly encourage you to sign up for Caltrans’ periodic email notifications about this project.

SAN MATEO COUNTY ― Caltrans has delayed the start date on excavation and paving work on the State Route (SR) 1 Multi-Asset Roadway Rehabilitation Project.

Excavation work that will create enough room for a new bike lane originally planned to start on March 23rd, 2026 has been pushed back to mid-April.

Residents who live close to the work sites will be notified in advance and should expect some nighttime noise.

Excavation work will take place at each location for two to three nights:

  • Between Poplar St. and Kelly Ave.
  • South of Mirada Rd.
  • North and South of Magellan Ave.
  • Between Coronado and Capistrano Rd.
  • Near Coral Reef Ave.
  • Near North Capistrano Rd.

In late April, roadway paving work will begin, necessitating lane closures at various locations within the project limits.

Please expect minor delays and allow extra time. Some daytime work may be necessary at short notice.

Known as the SR-1 Multi-Asset Roadway Rehabilitation Project, the $46.7M project encompasses upgrading assets (such as pavement, guardrails, curbs, and crosswalks) that are nearing the end their service lives. Assets will be brought up to ADA standards, and Class II bike lanes will be added to both the north- and south-bound sides of the roadway. The project will continue through the summer of 2027.

This work is funded by the State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP). SHOPP is the State Highway System’s “fix-it-first” program that funds the repair and preservation on the state’s highway system.

All work is weather dependent. Please drive with caution. Thank you for your patience as we work to maintain our state’s highways, bridges, and tunnels.
