ARTICLE. The national health care crisis hit close to home today, Friday, 8/30/19, at a hearing considering the sale of Seton Medical Center and Seton Medical Center Coastside to Strategic Global Management (SGM) at the Mavericks Event Center.
SGM’s purchase of the two hospitals (and others in San Francisco and LA) will only be agreed to if the Attorney General (AG) of the State of California agrees to change the terms of the 2015 purchase agreement from the Daughters of Charity to the current operator, Verity Health Systems, which is now bankrupt.
If the new buyer SGM, who made the only offer, agrees to purchase our hospital, there will be many changes, most of them unknown at this point.
Details of the original conditions, and the new ones requested by SGM, are outlined on the AG”s website. https://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/agweb/pdfs/charities/nonprofithosp/verity-schedule-8-6.pdf .

It will be difficult but the AG will have to balance the needs of the community, patients and employees of Seton Medical Center and Seton Medical Center Coastside with the economic realities of operating a 21st healthcare.
If not, we will lose Seton Coastside, one of our most important and valuable resources. I hope that the County of San Mateo, the Health Plan of San Mateo and the City of Half Moon Bay will do everything in its power to retain health care for the Coastside.
