“Vacancy in the Office of San Mateo County Sheriff:
A) Discussion, receipt of public input, direction to staff, and/or adoption of procedures and schedules regarding the process to fill the vacancy in the office of San Mateo County Sheriff, pursuant to Section 415 of the San Mateo County Charter.
B) Discussion, receipt of public input, and direction to staff regarding the qualifications of the individual to be appointed to fill the vacancy in the office of San Mateo County Sheriff, should the Board of Supervisors elect to make an appointment.”

Next Steps: Process for Recruitment and Selection of New Sheriff

  • Thursday, Nov. 6th, 2025: Supervisors to interview candidates and identify finalists.
  • Monday, Nov. 10th, 2025: Candidate Forum will be held.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 12th, 2025: Sheriff’s final selection.


County Opens Recruitment for New Sheriff: Wednesday, October 29th, 2025
Applications will be accepted until noon Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2025. Candidates must live in San Mateo County and meet state requirements for the position, including holding a valid certificate from the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, or POST, or demonstrating relevant education and experience.  >>> READ MORE


San Mateo County Supervisors Direct Staff to Develop Sheriff Appointment Process: Tuesday, October 28th, 2025
“After a special meeting with nearly 100 comments received from the public about what qualities they want in the County’s next sheriff, the Board of Supervisors directed staff Tuesday evening to pursue an appointment process that emphasizes transparency, accountability and community trust…Under Section 415 of the County Charter, any appointment by the Board must be made by November 13, 2025.”
