PRESS RELEASE. From the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office on April 30th, 2026.

Deputies with the Coastside Patrol Bureau are investigating a suspected communications wire theft that resulted in a pole fire and power disruption affecting the Coastside area early Wednesday morning, April 29, 2026.

The incident occurred just before 4:00 a.m., when emergency crews responded to reports of a fire involving a utility pole. Preliminary findings indicate that the fire was likely sparked during the theft of communications wiring, causing damage to nearby infrastructure and leading to localized power outages.

The case will be followed up by the Sheriff’s Office Investigations Bureau, which has previously handled similar high-profile incidents in Woodside and Portola Valley with notable success. This case will be pursued with the same level of diligence and tenacity.

Public safety remains a top priority. The Coastside Patrol Bureau asks that anyone with information related to suspicious activity in the area around the time of the incident come forward and assist with the investigation.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
