Agenda Item G5

On March 28, 2024, the Ocean Science Center Ad hoc Committee met at the Harbor District Office.

Commissioner Slater-Carter and Commissioner Domurat were in attendance. Staff support was provided by Rachelle Modena and Eric Shapiro.

The first item addressed was to define the purpose of the ad hoc committee. The committee discussed several ideas and settled on:

Mission Statement: To increase ocean science focused research and educational opportunities at the San Mateo County Harbor District.

The second item discussed was the focus and scope of an Ocean Science Education and Research Center and increasing focused educational opportunities at the District. The committee acknowledged that the concept is very broad. In order to fine tune the committee’s efforts, the committee will focus on a series of actions to further assist the development of the concept. Goals to focus on over the next six months are below.

Goals: Identify potential educational, governmental, community, and philanthropic partners. Narrow down scope to identify immediate actions and opportunities that can be implemented. Develop a long-term plan for expansion and sustainability.

The next meeting will be scheduled after the committee completes at least two site visits to other ocean science centers and receives a report on current educational programming at Pillar Point Harbor and Oyster Point Marina.
