CAL FIRE CZU is collaborating with San Mateo County and Caltrans District 4 to initiate the San Mateo County Corporation Yard Fuel Reduction Project. This strategic effort aims to reduce flammable material along the Highway 92 corridor to mitigate the risk of roadside fire ignitions spreading into nearby communities and damaging critical infrastructure.
Please see a map on Page 2 and photos of the project area on Page 3.
CAL FIRE CZU Forester Sarah Collamer noted that this specific area has been identified by San Mateo County Fire Battalion Chiefs as an area of concern due to a history of small fires and the proximity of multiple vehicles with lithium-ion batteries stored nearby.
This proactive partnership highlights a shared commitment between state and local agencies to
enhance wildfire resiliency and protect the residents of San Mateo County.
- When: The project is scheduled to take place from Monday, January 12, through Friday, January 16, 2026. One lane of Highway 92 in the immediate area is expected to be closed on Thursday,January 15, from 9:30am to 3:30pm, with a potential one lane closure on Friday, January 16, from 9:30am to 3:30pm.
- Where: Work will occur on county-owned property and within the Caltrans Right of Way along the Highway 92 corridor at the San Mateo County Corporation Yard.
- What: Crews will remove “ladder fuels”—small trees and low-hanging brush that allow fire to climb into the forest canopy—prioritizing eucalyptus and other invasive species. Thinning will also include trees under four inches in diameter to break up fuel continuity and provide a more defensible space for emergency responders.
