The Glenwood Fire Center, located in La Honda, San Mateo County represents a strategic enhancement to CAL FIRE’s emergency response and wildfire mitigation infrastructure in the Santa Cruz Mountains and beyond.

Established in 2024 within a repurposed 60-acre facility, the center serves as a vital base of operations for two state-funded firefighter hand crews. These specialized teams, comprised of approximately 100 personnel including captains, apparatus engineers, and highly trained handcrew firefighters, are tasked with providing critical coverage across San Mateo and Santa Cruz Counties, with the ability to respond all over California. The facility’s establishment addresses a vital need for localized, rapid-response resources capable of navigating the region’s rugged coastal terrain, where traditional fire engines often cannot operate.

The primary mission of the Glenwood hand crews extends beyond active fire suppression to include proactive, year-round vegetation management and community protection. During their nine-month active rotation, crews focus on hazardous fuel reduction, the execution of prescribed burns, and the construction of fire lines to fortify containment boundaries.

By integrating rigorous daily physical conditioning and technical training with a focus on all-risk emergency management, the center significantly bolsters the region’s fire resilience. This operational model not only shortens response times for active incidents but also plays a preventative role in mitigating the impact of future wildfires in an area designated as a high-hazard severity zone.
