ARTICLE. Coming from the the San Mateo Athletic Club Bulldogs as Head Coach, Jim Stretch has come home to our local Mavericks Swim Team! I remember working with Jim 15 years ago to develop the Club, Bronze, Silver and Gold swim levels that allowed the team to expand its age reach.
Jim worked as the JV swim coach at Carlmont High School. Jim also worked as an age group coach with the Maverick’s Swim Club. In addition, Stretch has served as a USA Swimming Official and has been a USA Swimming recognized coach since 2006.
In 2012, Stretch became the new Head Coach of the boys and girls swim program up at the HMBHS, while his daughters Britany and Sarah were on the team.
And now he is back!
Here is the Official Press Release from the Mavericks Swimming Association Board.

Mavericks Swimming hires Jim Stretch as its new head coach
After a long, exhaustive search for a new head coach to step in as Coach Lauren moves on to a new opportunity, we have hired a new head coach: Jim Stretch! Jim has a long history and very close connections to Mavericks, both of his children swam for Mavericks and assisted/guarded at various times in thier adulthood. Jim has been the Mavericks Meet Director for our annual Sprint-O-Rama for the last several years and previously coached Mavericks. Jim left Mavericks in 2013, to be the head coach of Bulldog Swim Club (BSC) in San Mateo. While at BSC he grew the team from just under 25 members to almost 150 and oversaw increases in athlete performance from just one JO qualifier to more than 10 in 2019. While at BSC, Stretch raised the clubs Pacific Swimming VCC rank from 108th to 28th. Additionally six of Stretch’s BSC athletes were USA Swimming Sectional Championship qualifiers in the summer of 2019. When last coaching on the coast, Stretch lead the HMBHS Varsity boys, JV boys and JV girls to PAL Ocean division conference titles. Stretch recently said “ I am so happy to be back home coaching on the coast and back working with a competitive swimming focused nonprofit club” Stretch’s goals for coastside Swimming in 2019-20 are to grow the team, grow participation in sanctioned swimming meets, and to qualify more athletes into championship meets like Junior Olympics and Far Westerns. Outgoing Mavericks head coach Lauren Baeder said this about Jim “ Mavericks is very fortunate to have acquired an experienced coach like Jim Stretch. Jim is a leader in the area’s swimming community and he helped me assimilate into coaching here on the coast.”
We will be taking a 4-week break at the end of this Summer session, beginning on 8/12/19 and we will resume for the Fall session on 9/12/19. This will allow children to get settled into the new school year and prepare for the arrival of our new head coach. We will be holding try outs for new swimmers during the week of Labor Day so please pass along the great news to anyone you know interested in joining the team.
Thanks for your patience during this search and have a wonderful rest of the summer!
Best,
Mavs Board of Directors – Heather Prince, Jesse Shick, Kirsten Frantz and Tanja Fischer
