PRESS RELEASE. From the CAL FIRE CZU San Mateo-Santa Cruz Information Officer Nextdoor on September 11th, 2025.

We are honored to share the news about the Grand Opening of the Coastside Fire Station #41 South Lot Landscaping and Sidewalk Improvements Project! 🎉

This project, which began in 2022, was a true community effort. What started as an idea for a fire-safe interpretive garden quickly grew to incorporate pedestrian safety improvements. Thanks to our collaboration with the County of San Mateo and Safe Routes to School Coastside, we’ve added a new sidewalk from Avenue Cabrillo to Obispo, new curb ramps, and a high-visibility crosswalk. This has transformed the area into a park-like space that also offers a safer, more accessible route to the beach and nearby schools.

We’re incredibly grateful for the support from our community, including former and current Board Members like Steve Stockman. A special thank you to our funding partners, the County of San Mateo ADA Committee and the Office of Education, who together contributed more than $170,000 for these pedestrian safety improvements.

The highlight of the day was dedicating a memorial bench to Fire Captain David Lutz. As the plaque says, his contributions to Coastside Fire and the Coastside community will never be forgotten. We were very glad to see Captain Lutz’ family at the event, and their attendance made the moment even more meaningful for us.

We would like to offer our heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this project a reality! This includes former Coastside Fire District staff like former Chief Jonathan Cox, our partners at Granada Community Services District and the Midcoast Community Council, and the hard-working teams from Scapes, Andreini Construction, RHAA Landscape Architects, BKF Engineers, Zoon Engineering, and Sean Rose Engineering.

Today was a very special day for Coastside Fire and the entire community. We’re proud of what we’ve built together, and this project is officially open for generations to come.

So come out and enjoy the safer walking path, the memorial bench, the view, and our company!
