Pacifica, California 94044
Sanchez Art Center, Pacifica— Contained, an exhibition of ceramic and related paper work by Maria Porges and Nancy Selvin; Living through History, an invitational exhibit providing reflection on the times we are living in and how they are mirroring the past, with the works of Robin L Bernstein, Lidia Hasenauer, and James Shefik; and, Fractured Fairytales, a group show by the members of the Art Guild of Pacifica, will open concurrently on Friday, May 30, with an evening reception from 7 – 9 pm.
Contained curator Philip E. Linhares notes how working in clay is an ancient craft, hand worked to create vessels or containers for foods and liquids. Maria Porges and Nancy Selvin, friends and colleagues as professors at the California College of Art, (CCA) chose the title “Contained” in recognition of the earliest function of their chosen medium. Their work is inspired by traditional forms from many countries and periods in history, as well as the personal lived experiences of the artists. The themes and works exhibited in Living Through History are powerful, commanding attention and thought, and may raise feelings of acute unease. Visitors are invited to find the exquisite beauty in the pieces while being confronted with the challenge of viewing the show with an openness of mind and potentially leaving with a fullness of heart that we don’t need to repeat history, if we can rise above it.
The Friday night reception is free and open to the public and will include live music with the Don Rowell Quartet. On the last day of all the exhibitions, Sunday, June 29, the closing program will begin at 3:30 pm with a conversation with Main Gallery artists Maria Porges, Nancy Selvin, and curator Phil Linhares. Sanchez Art Center is located at 1220 Linda Mar Blvd, Pacifica, CA. Following opening night, gallery hours are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm, and by appointment, during the week.
