Half Moon Bay Odd Fellows Speaker Series: Philip Chapnick on a A Brief But Spectacular History of China

“I lived and worked in China for six years — from 2010 through 2016 — and like most Americans, when I arrived I knew hardly anything about China.

I was surprised and astounded to discover just how rich, deep and profound Chinese culture, history, philosophy and art actually is.

And I want to share with you some of the highlights of my discoveries by presenting an, admittedly radically incomplete and wholly idiosyncratic, view of the last 5000 years in China.

I will mix in personal stories from my time there as well, having been there at the start of the radical transformation currently taking place under President Xi Jinping.

I also had the opportunity to travel extensively in China and to haunt the many markets throughout the country and I’ll have some of the highlights of my collection on display for you to enjoy first hand.”

Odd Fellows will be hosting a lucky draw for some wonderful “gu dong” or Chinese treasures that Philip picked up during his adventures in China. We will also be serving Chinese tea and dumplings prior to the feature presentation.
