Boulder Creek, California 95006
Join Bay Nature, Hudson Northrop, and Alberto Bonilla, for a hike at Big Basin Redwoods State Park, Sunday, September 20th, 2026 from 9:00am – 12:00pm.
Following the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex fires, Big Basin continues to reopen trails and experiment with recovery strategies.
As mentioned in the Spring 2026 article “A Burned Big Basin is Reborn” by Tanvi Dutta Gupta, “visitors can once more spend hours with some of California’s largest trees and witness how a park is remade after near-total destruction.”
This event will give us a window into the work that makes the park’s forest health possible. We will start the day by meeting at Park Headquarters at 8:45am before carpooling to Sky Meadow Road and arriving at a restoration site normally closed to the public.
Here we will begin our walk and hear from Hudson about the completion of a recent restoration project aimed at promoting Old Growth characteristics. He and Alberto will guide us through this site which is a prime example of all forestry management strategies the park is implementing for long term management. Along the way we will see recovering second growth and gain a better understanding of what these redwoods need to grow back big and strong.
