Backflow Basics. Backflow is a plumbing issue where contaminated water flows backward into a clean water line, typically due to a sudden drop in water pressure. Backflow preventers, also called check valves, are devices that prevent this from happening by allowing water to flow in only one direction.

A backflow preventer is a device designed to stop water from flowing backward in a plumbing system, preventing contamination of the potable water supply. It acts as a one-way valve, allowing water to flow in only one direction – from the public water main into a building’s pipes. This prevents potentially contaminated water from flowing back into the public water supply, which could jeopardize the health of others.
