Coastside Communications Breakthrough! Supervisor Mueller and Anna Eshoo Get CalTrans to Agree to Devil’s Slide Tunnel Cable Redundancy by Next Year

VIDEO. From the Midcoast Community Council (MCC) Priority Setting Retreat meeting on Wednesday, May 17th, 2023 at 6:00pm, as a hybrid meeting.

Our San Mateo County District 3 Supervisor, Ray Mueller:

An early 2023 storm-related communications outage, originating in a cable cut in La Honda, blacked out most communications on the Coast, creating a very dangerous situation, caused by a lack of cable redundancy at Devil’s Slide.

Ray got our Congressional Representative, Anna Eshoo, all of the mobile communication companies and CalTrans in one room.

Ray said to them, “This can not happen again. I do not care whose problem it is, we can not go through another winter without redundancy ~ it has to be fixed.” Note that Anna Eshoo sits on the committees that oversee the communication companies.

CalTrans said that they would space in the conduit that already goes through Devil’s Slide. CalTrans has asked the communications companies for their designs so they can figure out where the tie-ins would be. CalTrans asked San Mateo County to streamline the permitting process so they can complete the project by next year. County agreed. The County has a strategy to work with the California Coastal Commission.
