ENEWS. From the City of Half Moon Bay on January 29th, 2026.
After nearly 26 years of dedicated service in law enforcement, Half Moon Bay Police Bureau Chief and Coastside Patrol Bureau Captain Richard Cheechov will retire Jan. 31, 2026, bringing his career full circle in the community where it began.
Captain Cheechov’s public service career began with the United States Marine Corps, having reported to boot camp just one week after graduating from high school.
After eight years of service, he began his law enforcement career as a Half Moon Bay police officer. Captain Cheechov later continued his service with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, working in Corrections, Patrol and the Motorcycle Unit. A traffic officer through and through, he found this to be an area where he could truly make a difference and save lives.
Over the years, he rose through the ranks and, in June 2024, was selected to serve as captain overseeing the Coastside Patrol Bureau.
When asked about his favorite memory, Captain Cheechov did not hesitate, citing his time as a young motorcycle officer in Half Moon Bay.
We thank Captain Cheechov for his leadership, service and lasting impact on public safety, and wish him all the best in his well-earned retirement!
The process to appoint the next Half Moon Bay Police Bureau Chief and Coastside Patrol Bureau Captain is underway, with an announcement expected by mid-March. In the meantime, there will be no lapse in coverage, and our commitment to serving our Coastside communities remains deeply rooted.
