PRESS RELEASE. From the State Coastal Conservancy on September 17th, 2026.
A grant of up to $1,000,000 to the County of San Mateo to undertake the Half Moon Bay Landfill Climate Resilience Planning Project, consisting of conducting technical studies; analyzing alternatives; engaging the community; and preparing 30% conceptual designs, a plan for funding implementation, and a plan for permitting and environmental review for adaptation of the landfill located at Poplar Beach in San Mateo County.
From Half Moon Bay Mayor, Debbie Ruddock on Nextdoor: “On Thursday September 17th, 2026 the State Coastal Conservancy awarded a grant of up to $1 million to San Mateo County for the Half Moon Bay Landfill Planning Project adjacent to Poplar Beach for technical studies, evaluation of alternatives for cleanup and improved containment, community outreach, conceptual designs, and funding and permitting plans. Thank you Supervisor Ray Mueller and San Mateo County staff for working with the city to prioritize this project, which will lead to improved public safety and potential use of the area for additional public recreation. Thank you Coastal Conservancy staff and board for your vision and assistance.”
