ENEWS. From the City of Half Moon Bay on July 9th, 2026.
In early 2025, the City partnered with a local Eagle Scout to pilot the use of legal beach fire pits at Poplar Beach. The pilot was a success, and the City is pleased to bring the fire pits back for the summer.
Beginning tonight and continuing throughout the summer, five concrete fire pits will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. The pits are located north and south of the beach access at the end of Poplar Street, below the public parking lot. Fires are only permitted within these designated pits. Fires elsewhere on the beach remain prohibited and will continue to be enforced, along with other unsafe or prohibited activities.
Please help keep the beach safe by burning only clean firewood or charcoal (no pallets, trash, or treated wood), keeping fires contained within the pits, and extinguishing coals with water—never burying them in the sand, where they can cause serious burns. Please also pack out your trash, refrain from consuming alcohol, keep dogs on leash, and stay aware of tides and ocean conditions.
For beach safety information, visit https://www.visithalfmoonbay.org/ocean-safety/.
This continued pilot is intended to create more opportunities for residents and visitors to safely enjoy Poplar Beach while supporting equitable coastal access for the entire community. We hope everyone enjoys these new amenities responsibly.
