OBITUARY. By Moss Beach’s Seal Cove resident, Cid Young. Photos from Richard Tabor.

On January 1st, 2026, my long-time neighbor Carol Elizabeth Guion passed away in her late nineties, after a long life. She was born on April 4th, 1934.

She lived at the end of my street in a “crooked house” that tipped precariously toward the Pacific Ocean, due to the slow-moving landslide in the notorious Seal Cove area of Moss Beach.

She never-the-less bravely soldiered on there since the 1960’s, raising chickens in her yard, her horse in the field,  composting food scraps, drawing, walking her Afghan dog, and entertaining her friends, who often had to hold onto their wine glasses because of the tilt of her home.

Carol was a true character, but she resisted moving from her beloved home when the County Red-tagged her house and finally due to issues due to her advancing health issues, she eventually went to live at Brookside Skilled Nursing Facility in San Mateo, around Thanksgiving time, where she passed away on New Years Day.

There will be a memorial service for Carol on Sunday, March 22nd, 2026 at 2:30pm in Seal Cove in the yard next to Carol’s house.

  1. I lived at the corner of San Ramon and San Lucas way back in the day. Immediately fell in love with Carols horse Comanche, and the beautiful black gelding 8 Dollars. Carol worked with me for countless hours on my bareback no hands at a trot lunging eventually allowing me to ride by myself down and through Dolgers Park often and along the bluffs. I can picture that crooked, tilting house with creaking floor boards and her really big Afgans. Truly a character who helped me develop my love and appreciation for horses I still have today. Rest in peace, smelling the flowers with a warm breeze in your hair surrounded by love.
