Coastal Adaptation Engineering Workshop: Nature-Based Solutions On Friday on April 25th, 2025 Commission staff participated in a workshop with Caltrans District 4 engineers and planners The workshop was second in a series developed by the Commission’s transportation and engineering staff in conjunction with Point Blue Conservation Science, NOAA, and the USGS funded by the NOAA Effects from Sea Level Rise Grant Program. The goal of the workshop was to advance knowledge of the opportunities and challenges of applying nature-based solutions to coastal engineering problems, and to increase the understanding and application of nature-based solutions within Caltrans. The workshop was right here in Princeton, where attendees heard from the engineers and scientists who worked on the Surfer’s Beach Sand Restoration project permitted by this Commission in 2023, to think about opportunities to address the long-term adaptation challenges along Highway 1. Commission staff are proud to have helped plan the workshop and look forward to continued coordination with our state and federal partners on nature-based adaptation strategies.
