PRESS RELEASE. From the California Teachers Association and Cabrillo Unified Teachers Association on September 12th, 2024

NEWS RELEASE

As Cost-of-Living Soars in Half Moon Bay, Union Fought for a Living Wage to Help Educators Stay in Cabrillo Unified.

HALF MOON BAY – Just before midnight, members of the Cabrillo Unified Teachers Association (CUTA) reached a tentative agreement with the Cabrillo Unified School District (CUSD). The deal includes a 6% raise retroactive to July 1, 2023, and $100 per month toward family health care, which would make a huge difference for educators paying out of pocket for health insurance. Both parties still have to ratify the agreement.

Since June 30, educators have been working without a contract and put in a possible position to choose between serving the families of Half Moon Bay and being able to support their own families. This deal is the culmination of the years of tireless efforts of CUTA members organizing and standing together in solidarity.

“For far too long, educators were shouldering the burden of no salary increases with the soaring cost of living increases. This deal will put us on a path to ending the educator retention and recruitment crisis and ensure every student has access to a permanent teacher in the classroom,” said CUTA President John Carey. “Together, we achieved so much and are excited to be in the classroom with our students, rather than on a picket line.”

Cabrillo Unified Teachers Association is affiliated with the 310,000-member California Teachers Association and the 3 million-member National Education Association.
