Mavericks

Brian Overfelt has been an organizer and board member for Titans of Mavericks since 2010.  Mavericks has come a long way since Brian got involved.  One change fans appreciated this year was his partnership with Red Bull Streaming TV coverage.  Viewers enjoyed more cameras, better quality cameras, and more angles than ever before live online.  Brian tries to keep Mavericks as organic as possible because:

  • Mavericks is an unique opportunity for athletes with the courage to drop in on the big waves
  • Mavericks benefits the community as local businesses prosper during the event
  • Brian has tremendous respect for the athletes who enjoy the big waves

Brian OverfeltBeach Replenishment

Every surfer loves a good beach.

Coastside surfers have been advocating for beach replenishment since 1970.  There are only 5 sources of sand flow to North American beaches.  Every time a breakwater is built, it diverts sand from the coastline.  Beaches around the world have sand replenishment programs.  Sadly, those programs do not yet exist for the Pillar Point Breakwater.

We all know the sand is moving.  Cliffs crumble.  Highway 1 is eroding.  We need sand replenishment programs along the coast.  Nourishing the beaches has so many benefits:

  • brings beaches back
  • good for the local economy
  • protects the highway
  • gives the snowy plover the sand they need
  • protects home
  • preserves our harbor

Brian sums it up best when he said “Our coastside, harbor and beaches are a beautiful gem and we need to treat is as such.”  You can sees some of Brian’s stunning photography on his website.

You can experience Brian’s love for great local food and music at his establishment, the OPL Public House & Grill.  Brian feel in love with local food when he was surfing around the world with his brother.  They enjoyed fresh local fish the day it was caught and produce the day it was harvested.

His love for music began long ago.  Brian was a singer in a metal band, The Dust, for 13 years.  Back in the day his band used to play at the OPL.  Somehow life comes back full circle.  Today Brian is the proprietor at OPL…giving coastsiders a special spot to savor local music and food.  Naturally, OPL is also set up to stream international surfing competitions, including Mavericks, on TV.
