PRESS RELEASE. March 11, 2021. Donations Appreciated.
For the past two weeks I have had the privilege to hear, firsthand, several emotional comments from community members getting their first dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine at the pop-up clinics taking place in our region.
Donate If You Can!
Reactions have ranged from some loud cheers, to occasionally some tears, with many comments of appreciation to the nurses and staff, and some deeply sweet interactions like a mom recently telling her child āWe will get to see grandma again very soon!ā
In December 2020, the announcement of the approval of the first vaccine prompted two things for me and the Puente team. We were very excited for the news on this insanely quick scientific accomplishment, and we also started planning how to bring the vaccines to the community members of Pescadero, La Honda, Loma Mar and San Gregorio.
We first surveyed a small but significant number of people to learn about their interest on getting vaccinated. Ninety-eight households responded and we learned that 74% of them

would want to have access to the vaccine.
Since last year, we had been partnering with San Mateo County Health and the La Honda-Pescadero Unified School District to offer drive-through covid-19 testing clinics. That gave us a good idea of how the vaccine clinics could work for our region, and the kind of outreach and logistics needed to do it effectively. Once our San Mateo county partners confirmed there would be an allocation of vaccines for our regionās farmworkers, we stepped in to work directly with the farms, ranches and nurseries to estimate the actual need and coordinate logistics because this time, vaccines would be coming to the workers right on site!
Our team was joyful as we started planning outreach, messaging, the registration process and the route to follow for two days to get the vaccines to the farms, as well as simultaneously planning additional clinics at Pescadero Elementary and Pescadero High School. These was intense work. Normally, our teams would like to have two to four weeks to plan events like this, but in this case, we only had a fewĀ days from the notice of the vaccine allocation to execution. The early conversations we had with farmers about potential clinics paid off to make this possible.
On the big day, HR Support, a vendor selected by San Mateo County authorities, arrived with what looked like a very modern cooler, two vans, tables, chairs and seven staff members. Our team met them in downtown Pescadero and guided them first to the farms at the edge of the county line. When we arrived at the first farm, all the employees were already outside waiting to get vaccinated. Some filled out the paperwork themselves and some needed our assistance to do so. They lined up, registered, were asked health questions, got their shot, and then moved to an observation area to wait for fifteen minutes to make sure they did not have a bad reaction. After the observation period ended, they received their vaccination card with the date of their first dose and information on the follow up for the second dose. The process went smoothly, and we did not have any complications.
While this was happening, Puente was receiving calls to register people for the stationary clinics. Appointments for the first two of them filled quickly.
As of Friday March 5th, we have coordinated vaccinations for 42 farms, ranches and nurseries through two days of mobile clinics, and have hosted three stationary clinics. Currently and per county instructions, we are giving appointments to people that live or work in Pescadero, La Honda, Lomar Mar and San Gregorio and who are agriculture, food, or healthcare workers, and people 65 and older. This collaboration has provided the first dose of the vaccine to 540 adults on the South Coast.
Next, we are running a few more clinics as the vaccines are available and the eligibility criteria more inclusive. And we are starting to plan to come back to farms with our partners to offer the second dose.
We could not be more appreciative for La Honda-Pescadero Unified School District who made their facilities available, and the staff of the San Mateo County Street and Field Medicine Team and San Mateo County Health have been with us at every step of the way.
And we are grateful to you for supporting our work!
