PEOPLE FIRST – Conduct fair, accurate and transparent elections to increase public participation and confidence
The San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division is seeking seasonal Election Vote Center Representatives (Office Assistant I) to assist in the upcoming November 3, 2020 Presidential General Election. Vote Centers have replaced polling places as in-person voting sites and offer additional services over a longer period of time. This position requires the ability to operate a computer and computer applications/software quickly and accurately.
We are currently seeking dedicated and hard-working individuals for the temporary, full-time position of Vote Center Representative to be hired for the following duties:
- Use a computer to verify voter eligibility.
- Provide information about the upcoming election.
- Guide voters on use of electronic ballot marking devices.
- Operate/troubleshoot voting equipment.
- Provide in-person customer service including assisting voters to register to vote and assisting voters in casting a ballot.
- Issue ballots.
- Maintain accurate files and records.
- Secure Election materials and supplies.
Several, but not all, Vote Center Representatives require fluency in Spanish, Mandarin and/or Cantonese, Tagalog/Filipino Korean, Burmese, Hindi, or Japanese.
Vote Centers will be open for four to eleven days. Those hired can expect to work approximately 7 – 15 days including training.
Vote Center Representatives will work 5 days per week and 8 hours per day. This assignment will include weekends and potentially 2 or more evenings. On Election Day, Vote Center Representatives will work from 6:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. or later if necessary.
Vote Center hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily during the period of operation, including weekends and holidays, and 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Election Day, November 3, 2020. These positions may require evening work assignments.
Personal protective equipment and sanitizing supplies will be provided to staff to be used in the Vote Centers and protective measures will be implemented to ensure the safety of Vote Center Representatives, as well as the public.
NOTE: This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment. Hourly wage starts at: $21.02
IMPORTANT: The County of San Mateo has implemented best-practice guidelines in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure safety of the general public and staff. Such measures include, but are not limited to, enforcing social distancing and providing staff with personal protective equipment, such as gloves, hand sanitizer, face masks, and sneeze guards.Qualifications

Eleven-day Vote Centers will open on October 24, 2020, and four-day Vote Centers will open on October 31, 2020. Once opened, Vote Centers will remain operational through November 3, 2020.
