Canepa: Data shows poor health depends on ZIP Code San Mateo County has highest life expectancy in state but deep disparities exist
REDWOOD CITY – San Mateo County Board of Supervisors President David J. Canepa made the following statement today after Canepa and Vice President Noelia Corzo sponsored a presentation from County Health Officer Kismet Baldwin-Santana on life expectancy in San Mateo County. The presentation shows that the county has the highest life expectancy in California at 86 years old compared to the state’s average of 81.8 years old and the nation’s average of 77.5 years old. The data, however, shows deep disparities in life expectancy by city across San Mateo County, with the cities of Half Moon Bay, Daly City and East Palo Alto having a life expectancy range of 75.8 years to 81.3 years old compared to the cities of Hillsborough, Foster City, Millbrae, San Carlos, Menlo Park and Atherton having a range of 84.5 to 89.9 years old.
“We are indeed the healthiest county in San Mateo County, but the data clearly shows your health and life expectancy depend greatly on the ZIP Code you live in,” Canepa said. “Using this data, as Board President this year, I have prioritized developing a strategic plan to identify what the social determinants of health are by ZIP Code and to make investments and pass policies in areas to improve the health of every resident in the county. The numbers do not lie, a portion of our population is being left behind and its on us to fix it.”
