The San Carlos Airport based Upwind Scholarship Program is currently accepting applications.
Upwind provides a scholarship that includes flight and ground training for a high school student to prepare them to obtain their Private Pilot certificate during the summer between their junior and senior year.
The Upwind Summer Scholarship Program has awarded 32 scholarships since 2013.
Three Coastside High School Juniors have completed the program.
- Ashton Hacke, Half Moon Bay (Upwind Class of 2019)
- Evan Isenstein-Brand, Pacifica (Upwind Class of 2015)
- Eric Dasmalchi, Half Moon Bay (Upwind Class of 2013)
This scholarship is funded entirely by San Carlos and Half Moon Bay Airport users. In addition to individual donations from Half Moon Bay Airport users, the Half Moon Bay Airport Pilots Association has contributed to Upwind to assist with flight training for Coastside recipients

Upwind Summer Scholarship Program Goals: Provide ground and flight training to Bay Area high school juniors with a passion for aviation. Scholarship recipients will complete a 9-week intensive training program during the summer between their junior and senior year to prepare them to take the FAA Private Pilot Airplane examination. We are committed to diversity and encourage all interested students to apply.
Upwind Summer Scholarship Program Objectives: Promote aviation and cultivate interest in aviation as a career to high school students.
Scholarship Candidate Requirements:
- High school student at least 17 years old by August 1st
- Good academic standing
- Passion for aviation
- Ability to complete a challenging, full-time training program during the summer
The Upwind Summer Scholarship provides comprehensive ground and flight training to the successful candidate(s).
Specifically, the Scholarship includes:
- FAA third class medical examination
- Ground school instruction
- FAA Knowledge Test
- Flight training material
- Flight instruction
- Phase checks at training milestones
- Check ride with FAA designated pilot examiner
- Mentoring from the San Carlos aviation community
