They Can Open 5/4: HMB Kayak, Mavericks Paddlesports, HMB Yacht Club, Skate Ramp, Bike Works Rentals

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

GREAT NEWS!

San Mateo County 4/29/2020 Health Officer order.

Regarding bike, kayak and stand up paddle rentals being allowed, the primary consideration is if they are primarily outside businesses (as opposed to being an indoor office space).

If so, and if you practice protocols like wiping down high touch surfaces, you can operate.

Yacht Club sailing—the consideration is if you can practice proper social distancing on the watercraft.

Skate parks are allowed.

Summer camps are allowed only if they provide child care to essential workers.

I’m not sure if you’ve visited the Shelter FAQ page, but you may find some other useful information here: https://www.smcgov.org/shelter-place-faqs

  1. In terms of kayak rentals, how do you disinfect wetsuits, PFDs, etc. between uses? *EXTREMELY* difficult. And yes, I know some kayak rental sites don’t require wetsuits or PFDs, but having rescued some of their customers in the past, I think that’s a very bad practice. Disinfecting a kayak is not an easy thing to do either. If a customer needs to be rescued, that places their rescuer (another boater, harbor patrol, Coast Guard, or even employee of the company doing the renting in a position where they simply can’t avoid being close to the person being rescued. Overall, while it *might* be allowed, with sufficient protocols for disinfecting, I would say that renting kayaks right now should be discouraged.
