Surfer First Aid by Magic Seaweed ~ spine, CPR, shark bite

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

SURFER FIRST AID web-article with curated videos by Magic Seaweed’s Callum Swift. Brilliant and comprehensive review of what you need to know in the event of a spine injury, heart attack and shark bite when you’re out surfing.

The more surfers who know what to do in an emergency the safer everyone will be.

Callum denotes the DO’s and DON’T’s of emergency first aid for surfers. Watch and learn. Spread the word and train your surf buddies to know what to do.

Have a Plan

The most significant point Callum makes is that you should have a plan simmering in your brain as you walk out to the surf.

  • Do you have cell service?
  • Are you alone?
  • Are you with kids?
  • Do your friends have any preexisting medical conditions and medications?

AEDs

An AED may seem like overkill. But if you are far away from emergency services, then you must know that reviving someone after a heart attack without an AED is statistically rare. EMS arrives within 6 minutes and does the shock with an AED. After 4 minutes brain death starts.  Doing the math? One fit person can do CPR for about 3-10 minutes. Thats 120 compressions per minute and 2 breaths thrown in. It is exhausting.
