Welcome to Surf Sessions! In our first episode, Mavericks pioneer Jeff Clark talks about monstrous waves-how to brave the waves while staying safe.
Jeff tells us about his experience at a recent Big Wave Risk Assessment course at North Shore’s Turtle Bay Resort with 60 other Big Wave First Responders. The Risk Assessment was run by Brian Keaulana’s Hawaiian Water Patrol. In two days Kirk Krack and Craig Gentry, from Performance Free Diving International, had all 60 participants holding their breath for 3 minutes!
Jeff shared with us how they trained to cope with different CO2 levels and anxiety, what it takes to be a rescuer, and how training surfers to use jet skis prevents deaths at Mavericks’ massive waves.

A good update on Ian Walsh and his twin brothers, Shaun and DK, and their water patrol and rescue company, at Skull Base’s website “More than Sports Clothing.”
Michelle is General Manager for CoastsiderRadio.com and producer for a series of surf-related podcasts call Surf Sessions. She also ran the volunteers for Mavericks Invitational for 3 years.
