Population aging is one of the biggest social transformations in the 21st century. In San Mateo County over 17% of our population are aged 65+. In the last 6 months of 2021 information about the unmet needs of seniors in our community was gathered during a series of focus groups that included seniors of varying income levels, Latinos, Chinese and the homeless. These needs include difficulty accessing healthcare, particularly for those who no longer drive; lack of information about and access to affordable housing; inadequate real-time information about age friendly activities taking place in the community; the importance of reducing ageism through community education, and the need to form a Coalition to coordinate and support local initiatives to increase the age friendliness of our community.
The State Farm Neighborhood Assist funds will be used to fund activities designed to meet the previously identified unmet needs of seniors in the domains of healthcare, housing, transportation, communication and information and social inclusion and respect. These include exploring options to improve access to healthcare for seniors in our isolated rural community; providing public education workshops about affordable housing options; developing communications infrastructure to ensure the dissemination of timely information about programs and services relevant to seniors; the development and implementation of anti-ageism training and the formation of an Age Friendly Coalition to advance the work and ensure sustainability.
“I’m so excited that Senior Coastsiders is one of the Top 200 Causes in the State Farm Neighborhood Assist program and has the chance of winning a $25,000 Grant! I have lived in HMB for nearly 30 years, and been a State Farm Agent for 21. Senior Coastsiders has been an integral part of our community and I hope people will come together to vote for this cause, allowing them to help continue their partnership with the City and others on the Coast to create an Age Friendly Community for us all.” said Heidi Kuiper, State Farm Insurance Agent in Half Moon Bay.
As part of it’s mission to support successful aging, Senior Coastsiders is committed to working with the City of Half Moon Bay and other private, public and non-profit organizations to adapt the environments in which we live, work, and play to meet the needs of a growing older population on the Coastide. This is sound preparation to ensure we are best prepared to foster healthy aging, reduce inequities, enhance inter-generational solidarity, and provide benefits for all ages.
“Living longer presents huge opportunities to create vibrant and resilient communities that support health, wellbeing, and quality of life for everyone.“ said Sandi Winter, Executive Director of Senior Coastsiders.
