Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

NEWS RELEASE. From Natalie Downe, Pillar Point Tide Pool Stewardship Coordinator for San Mateo MPA Collaborative. MPA = Marine Protected area.

The San Mateo MPA Collaborative has successfully brought together MPA experts to work on projects that raise awareness of their local marine protected areas.

Hi all!

As many of you already know, the pandemic has brought thousands of new visitors to Pillar Point Reef and the increase in harvesting is taking its toll on the ecology of the area.
The San Mateo MPA Collaborative and California Academy of Sciences are launching a new initiative to inspire curiosity and discourage unsustainable harvesting practices to help the recovery of wildlife in the area and ensure a productive, biodiverse reef for generations to come.

We are looking for enthusiastic and friendly volunteers to work 3-5, three-hour shifts per year during really low tides and talk to the people who are out there. If you or someone you know would be interested, please sign up here https://signup.pillarpointstewards.com

There is a two day training to help you build the skills you’ll need and we already have some awesome speakers lined up. The training will be in an outdoor classroom in El Granada and on the reef on March 27th and April 3rd, 2022.

We know you all love this place as much as we do, so please sign up if you are able!

Also, please spread the word. I have attached a poster you can share. We are hoping to build a stewardship corps that reflects the diversity of the Bay Area and visitors to Pillar Point. We are especially interested in finding folks who are bilingual in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Filipino. Volunteers need to be vaccinated & boosted and over 18.
