San Mateo County Shelter in Place FAQs
The Health Officer of San Mateo County has issued a new, somewhat less restrictive Shelter-In-Place Order effective at 11:59 pm on May 3, 2020. You can find the order here: English
Please be patient as we update the FAQs to reflect the new Order.
This Order is in effect until 11:59 pm on May 31, 2020 or until it is extended, rescinded, superseded or amended in writing by the Health Officer. The Health Officer is closely monitoring actions by our Governor as well as various indicators and is continually assessing whether and to what extent the County can ease restrictions to provide more flexibility and freedom for County residents.
As directed by the previous order, all businesses permitted to continue operations were required to draft and post a Social Distancing Protocol by April 3, 2020 at or near the business entrance that shall be easily viewable by the public and employees.

We are providing our interpretation of the County’s Order, which we believe is consistent with the Governor’s Order. Until and/or unless the Governor specifically indicates otherwise, the County’s Order applies when its directives are more restrictive than the Governor’s Order. If the Governor’s Order prohibits something the County’s Order allows, you should follow the Governor’s guidance.
