Coastside Search and Rescue Building Ad hoc Committee Report

Meeting Summary

On July 2, 2024, the Coastside Search and Rescue Ad hoc Committee met at the Harbor District Office.

Commissioner Mattusch was in attendance and chaired the meeting. Staff support was provided by Jim Pruett.

The Harbor District strongly supports providing maritime search and rescue capabilities on the Coastside. Except for the State Park Rangers providing nearshore/surf rescues at state beaches, the Harbor District is the only agency in San Mateo County providing immediate maritime search and rescue on the Coastside.

The issue is, as discussed and highlighted in past Harbor Board public meetings, Pillar Point Harbor is not properly staffed or equipped to perform the maritime search and rescue mission on a 24/7/365 basis. There is several hours each day the Coastside goes without any immediate maritime search and rescue capabilities.

To provide this service on a 24/7/365 basis, additional funding is required to staff, train, and equip Pillar Point Harbor. As the area of concern is within state waters (out to three miles from shore) off the Coast of San Mateo County, the Ad hoc Committee recommends the Board approve the President of the Board of Harbor Commissioners signing the attached letter addressed to Supervisor Mueller, District 3.
