PRESS RELEASE.
LABOR CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS END IN IMPOSITION OF WORK RULES RANGERS HAVE NOT AGREED TO DUE TO REFUSAL OF MIDPENINSULA REGIONAL OPEN SPACE DISTRICT MANAGEMENT TO DISCUSS PUBLIC SAFETY BENEFITS
Los Altos, CA – Extensive labor contract negotiations between the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (District) and the Midpeninsula Rangers Peace Officers Association (POA) have resulted in an impasse.
This result is entirely due to the refusal of District Management to engage with the POA in any discussion about a public safety benefits pension plan. The POA believes such a pension plan is necessary to protect Rangers who face numerous hazards in their roles as law enforcement first responders, as well as their additional duties including wildland firefighting and responding to medical emergencies.
The Rangers hoped speaking directly to District Board Members and the public would have convinced District Management to return to negotiations and discuss an appropriate public safety benefits pension plan. This has not been the case and the District Board of Directors will be voting on August 10, 2022 at their public meeting to impose work rules on the Rangers.
Rangers are asking the public to attend this meeting and submit public comment to request the District Board of Directors not force work rules on the Rangers but rather to return to labor negotiations and discuss a public safety benefits pension plan that will protect the Rangers as they protect the safety of the public.

Members of the MRPOA are all employees of MROSD and work as Rangers, dedicated to the preservation and conservation of Open Space Preserves.
The MRPOA helps protect them as they go about their service to our region. MRPOA is the labor representation group for Rangers, Lead Rangers, and Supervising Rangers who work at the MROSD. The MRPOA provides resources to help better its members and the Ranger profession as a whole.
The MRPOA represents its members on the negotiation and management of contracts made between its members and the MROSD. Additionally, it represents members on labor issues and provides membership to the Peace Officers Research Association of California, as well as legal representation when necessary.
