The Coaside has a Momentary Victory as the California public Utilities Commission Denies AT&T’s Bid to Drop Landline Telephone Service BUT With AB 2797 Looming Supervisor Mueller Says the Battle is Not Yet Won so stay tuned.
Cabrillo Unified School District Approves a $185 Parcel Tax and a $153M Bond for the 2024 Ballot. However a Public Commenter Questioned the Bond Poll’s legitimacy which was Done by the Bond Issuing Company that was doing the poll…The commenter was strongly suggesting that that is a Conflict of Interest? What say you???
The San Mateo County Planning Commission has Agendized the American Towers Montara Mountain Road Repair. This is 3.5 Miles of dirt road from Hwy 1 to the tippy top on Montara Mountain. They also want to Legalize a previously Non-permitted AT&T Wireless Facility. This action is Appealable to Coastal Commission…just saying. To be fair American Towers would like to underground power to the top of the mountain and has a permit application in motion for that.. If you want to comment this next Wednesday June 26th at 9:00am go to the post for the zoom link.
OneShoreline is Working with Congresswoman Eshoo and Senator Becker to get $2M into the Army Corp of Engineers Budget in order to Adapt our Sewer Plant, as in the sewer authority mid-coastside, also known as SAM. They want to try to manage Sea Level Rise using already paid for planning done by Integral Research which is some pretty cool water science. There’s a very informative map for you to check out. Man against nature, basically.
With a $4M Structural Deficit the Half Moon Bay City Council Resists a Parcel Tax but Asks Staff to Put a Half-cent Sales Tax on the 2024 Ballot to Raise $2M per Year. Note that 40% of HMB sales tax is Paid for by Visitors but according to Krystlyn Giedt of the Chamber, Businesses are not in Favor of the sales tax.
The Half Moon Bay City Council, in the same meeting, Acknowledges that the ADU Measure D for the 2024 Ballot BUT they Defer to the Planning Commission’s Decision Making Process. This is a pretty cool move as The old City Manager, Bob Nisbet, a few years ago, usurped the Planning commission and the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee, which I was on, regarding the Poplar Complete Streets Plan. Sounds bad but in that situation it was Covid and the Complete Streets grant was about to go POOF! And staff time costs would fall back to the general budget, rather than the grant … Yadayada. There is usually a logical reason for things however, a planning commissioner quit over this and this planning commission remembered and held the Council amicably accountable.
The San Mateo County Sheriff, Christina Corpus, Announced a New Captain for the Coastside Patrol Bureau. His name is Captain Richard Cheechov. Captain Rebecca Albin (who was a great communicator, as an ex-public information officer) is now in East Palo Alto which is closer to where she lives. Captain Cheechov has a lot of Coastside experience. He was stationed here 24 years ago as a new police officer. He has been overlapping Captain Albin to segue seamlessly to the Coastside. All I know is that Poplar Beach has a lot more accountability with parties and off leash dogs patrols. Say hi to Captain Cheechov if you see him. Go to Buzz to check out his resume.
The Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) has transferred the Johnston Property to the Midpeninsula Open Space District with the Intention to Expand Public Access, while still Retaining Prime Soils Farmlands for the Guisti’s brussel sprouts and Pachecho’s ranching. There will eventually be a new hiking trail in the uplands above the Johnston house. Got a great aerial shot that shows how breathtaking that hike will be.
