The 880 Stone Pine Cove Farmworker Housing’s initial study / Mitigated Negative Declaration was approved by the Half Moon Bay Planning Commission with concerns for the possible inundation by the Pilarcitos Dam. Included in the post is a Coastside County Water District presentation by the SFPUC (the keepers of Crystal Springs and our water) where they said the California Division of dams asked that they draw down the water behind the dam by one third. Old dams are an under funded problem nationwide. In California became aware of this problem after the Oroville dam failed and now are requiring all dams to be inspected and upgraded.

The Sewer Authority Mid-coastside tabled their 5-Year infrastructure rolling plan (which is not a budget by the way). With a 50-year maintenance project on horizon, there are possible rate increase ramifications so they are looking for an asset inventory analysis so they can plan accordingly

San Mateo County Harbor District had an update on WRDA-2024, which is also known as the Water Resources Development Act for the Pillar Point Sea Level Rise and Princeton by the Sea Shoreline Project: To get this going Anna Eshoo Helped, there will be Multi-jurisdictional Cooperation and the Army Corp of Engineers will be doing most of the Funding

The Cabrillo Unified School District has appointed an interim Superintendent. His name is Dr. Jeff Harding. The currently hired Superintendent Amber Lee-Alva is on medical leave for 5 months.

The San Mateo County Farm Bureau is appealing LAFCO’s approval for the annexation of the CSA-11 water system to include Pescadero High School and the new Fire Station #59. The appeal document is in the post. There are six things they are appealing about. Stay tuned to see how this is resolved. The main thing is to get potable water to the Pescadero students who have been drinking out of plastic bottles for 40 years.

Birgitta Bower started a “Bring Back the Story Poles” Petition. The Mid-Coastside Design Review Committee recently discussed the efficacy, cost and logistics of story poles. Have a listen. The 2024 Recreational Dungeness Crab Season will open this weekend with trap restriction while the Commercial Dungeness Crab fishery is delayed to protect whales from entanglement. Next week I will be covering the latest on pop-up crab traps.

HMBHS Pumpkin Bots has expanded with the Boys and Girls Club of the Coastside to support and include Cuhna’s Coastside Circuits bots club. Puente raised $440k for renovations at their new Pescadero North Street property for affordable, safe, and dignified farmworker housing. Go Puente!

  • On Nov. 16th at 8:00am, there is a Listos for Spanish Speakers class which will be held in Pescadero.  Call Monica Resendiz at Puente to sign up at 650 262 5993.
  • Also on Nov. 16th is an Emergency Preparedness Day planned by the County’s Community Affairs Department. This is an all day event at the Community Church on Stage Road, and it will possibly be aired on KPDO.  We’re working on that.  (There’s a story behind this.)
  • History lovers this weekend the Pacifica Historical Society and NPS Ranger host the Portola Expedition Discovery of San Francisco Bay lecture and hike.
