Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

PODCAST. Every Friday Michelle Dragony, the Chief Buzz Officer of Coastside Buzz, sits down with KPDO (& KZSG’s) Catherine Peery to review the Weekly Buzz Mail.

Have you noticed a pile of rock on the east side of the highway at Surfers Beach? Well, Caltrans is staging to repair the surfers beach Coastal Trail from the storm damage done in 2022 and 2023. The question of the moment is how will they get those rocks across the highway? Nightime road closures. Click for timing.

The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers is changing their Economic Benefits Computation from only federal benefits to now include regional, environmental and non-monetary benefits which may help the breakwater and sewer plant. Regarding the breakwater, the Army Corp refused to admit culpability for the damage to Surfers Beach and Mirada Road which is why the damage has continued without mitigation. It will be interesting how they might fund sand replenishment and artificial reefs with this new policy.

Welcome to the Coastside Buzz 2024 Election Roundup! The candidate filing period is now over… So Who is Running? 11 New People! Find out who they are so you can consider your vote for November. Coastside Buzz and the Chamber will be having Candidate debates, so stay tuned.

A Candidate Forum for the Pescadero Muncipal Advisory Council, where everyone is up for election this year, will take place on Oct. 6th, 2024 at 4:00pm to 6:00pm, moderated by the League of Women Voters.  It takes place in the Pescadero Elementary School Multi-Purpose room at 620 North Street.  Coincidentally, one of the candidates is the new principal for the Elementary School, Kassi Talbot.  Sustainable Pescadero is organizing, and KPDO will be airing live, and providing the audio and video equipment to stream live, and (hopefully) to show in the You-Tube channel.

On Wednesday the Midcoast Community Council presented the new design plans for the SFPUC’s restoration of the Montara Mountain summit that they destroyed by chopping off the top of the mountain so that they could put a weather station there and that after the San Mateo County Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors voted unanimously NO to the project. Lots of links to tell the story of coastal locals making the SFPUC accountable by walking them up the mountain and looking down at Hwy 1 which is in the California Coastal Commission’s jurisdiction. Checkmate. Thanks to the SFPUC for planning a beautiful lookout which could be done before the end of the year. Ironically, it will go back in front of the SMCo Planning Commission for approval.

On Tuesday, San Mateo County accepted $740k in grant monies to fund the new office of Labor Standards and Enforcement to fight wage theft. They will be able to hire a  full-time prosecutor, investigator and forensic auditor. This will benefit many minimum wage workers.

The National Park Service came to the Midcoast Community Council to discuss their plans for GGNRA’s Rancho Corral De Tierra. They are considering the horses and fire safety, as in campgrounds, and access for the general public. They’re plans will go to the SMCo Planning Commission for Coastal Development Permit consistency so stay tuned for some jurisdictional checks and balances. Remember they are the feds and they don’t like local public opinions.  Maybe they should have a chat with the Army Corp who has seen the light that local input is not just relevant, but critical to the success of any project.

Cabrillo Unified School District approved $6M in “True-Up Costs” for the El Granada Elementary Phase 1 construction project. The increased costs defined the construction swing space, parking lot and pathway configurations, utility integration and the 6 months it took to get a California Coastal Development permit. This is paid for with the 2018 Measure M $99M CUSD bond. Watch the video for the full conversation between the contract project manager (who started mid-project) and the board.
