Happy Weekend Coastsiders.

Welcome to the KPDO Coastside Buzz Mail report for the week of 8/16/24

The Candidate filing period is over. Next week Coastside Buzz will have a post on who signed up to run and who you can vote for.

Over the weekend the Coastside Buzz website will be updated with a new look. After 10 years our theme was out of date and we wanted to make some small improvements. The Calendar is still free and self-submit. Now submitters will be able to edit their posts as well. The banner will have an upgrade too, with a Pete Collum photo.

Midcoast Community Council’s Claire Toutant and HMB’s Deborah Penrose got the scoop on Seton Coastside with a 2.5 hour tour with County Lawyers and engineers. There are plans to reopen the facility as a skilled nursing facility and possibly as an Urgent Care facility with Xray and Labs. Have a listen as Claire Toutant said that the urgent care part is legally complicated, but that everyone is trying.

The Cabrillo Unified School District board received a Bond program construction update for Farallone and El Granada elementaries. There are some informative tables on past bonds and how they were spent so check those out. There are also some great construction pics from both schools.

Concept Yes, Location No ~ The Pillar Point Harbor retail tenants and community pushed back on PPH Retail Center’s $1.4M remodel/reconstruction design at Wednesday’s Midcoast Community Council. The plans would relocate tenants during construction for a couple of years and this after the Ketch Harbor Pub and its 19 local investors have spent $1M on restaurant renovations.

San Mateo County says that older adults over 55 have a 4-in-10 chance to slide into homelessness.  The article noted that the new San Mateo County Navigation Center can help with housing and social services.

CUSD turned off Farallone Elementary’s new lights right away in response to neighbors “Dark Skies” complaints. Buzz connected neighbors to the superintendent. CUSD will continue to develop a long term lighting plan. Hopefully this plan will help with the El Granada elementary lighting as well. The Midcoast Community Council certainly made a big point to ask for Dark Skies compliance for the EG elementary. Part of the problem is that the State Division of architecture does not like to accommodate local comments.

Last week the California Coastal Commission heard about the new sea level rise policy derived from the scientific data developed by the California Oceans Protection Council guidance. This is an update from their 2015 policy. This public review draft coordinates consistency with SB272. Review and certification of local LCP policies will be required of all coastal jurisdictions by 2034. Go to the OPC website to pursue the original scientific report.

Must Read! The Marin Post had an article in April 2024 titled “Paradigm Shift ~ Rethinking Housing Affordability”  This is the most detailed and comprehensive article I have read about why we have a housing crisis in the US. Like I said its a must read.

Check out “From Buggy to Automobile”! This is a virtual video tour of the Pescadero historic walking tour that Greg Timm has been doing for years. It was produced in 2020 during Covid. Fantastic photos to mix and match with Google maps. Oh and there is a real life walk in person with Gregg Timm on Sunday August 25th at 1:00pm. Check the calendar post for meeting place directions.

Speaking of the The Coastside Buzz Calendarthere are lots of events to check out AND peruse the Coastviews Music and Entertainment Guide which has all the music from Pescadero to Pacifica and in-between, every week all in one place.

This week on the Buzz calendar there is an event:
