ANNOUNCEMENT.
Governor Newsom announced last week a new program to provide California seniors with free restaurant meals. Known as “Great Plates Delivered,” the program will provide seniors and other groups with three meals a day, seven days a week from various local restaurants.
Those who qualify for the program include people over the age of 65, those exposed to COVID-19 as documented by a public health official or medical professional, and other high-risk individuals suffering from underlying health conditions. Eligible participants must live alone or with one other eligible adult, and cannot receive assistance from other federal nutrition programs, such as CalFresh. Income cannot exceed $74,940 for an individual or $101,460 for two. Participants must also state they are unable to prepare or obtain their meals.
Restaurants will be reimbursed up to $16 for breakfast, $17 for lunch, and $27 for dinner, plus an additional $5 for “incidental expenses.” The State will set nutritional guidelines and will allow local jurisdictions to decide which restaurants qualify.
Local programs are getting set up rapidly. Restaurants and food providers interested in participating may click https://covid19.ca.gov/
