Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

NEXTDOOR CONVERSATION. There were several conversation today, May 21st, 2024, on Half Moon Bay’s Nextdoor referring to an overnight party at Poplar Beach. One Poplar area resident reached out to the Gunn High School administration and got an immediate response from the 2024 Gunn Student Leadership.

I wrote to the principal of Gunn High School and she wrote this back to me:

Wendy Stratton 5:05 PM 5/21/2024

Dear Half Moon Bay Community Members,

We, the student leadership of the Gunn Class of 2024, formally apologize to the Poplar Beach community and Abundant Grace Coastline Workers for failing to leave your beautiful coastline the way we found it.

On May 19th, some of our peers enjoyed an end-of-year gathering, disgustingly leaving behind trash and belongings. This blatantly disregards all that we have learned about our basic civic duty and how to sustain the ecological health of our environment.

Moving forward, we are actively working with our peers, parents, and staff to reinforce the expectations of respectful behavior. Attached are our next steps as a school and the formal message broadcast to the Gunn Senior students and parents.

We sincerely appreciate the work currently being done to restore Poplar Beach and thank all community members involved with this process. It is of utmost importance that we are responsible for our actions, and we will work alongside the Half Moon Bay community to restore this space.

If any other help is needed from Gunn High School, please feel free to reach out to our Gunn administration at (650) 354-8200 or Dr. Wendy Stratton at [email protected].

Thank you,
  • Nathan Levy, Gunn High School ASB President
  • Maya Perkash, Senior Class President Naya Nebriaga
  • Senior Class Vice President Gunn High School Class of 2024
  • In partnership with Dr. Wendy Stratton, Gunn High School Principal

Gunn High School Student Action Items/Next Steps:

  • Parents of Gunn High School seniors were informed of how the beach was left following the student gathering.
  • Senior leaders are working with the Class of 2025 to create a trash plan alongside student leaders and admin for all future senior events.
  • Student groups will return to Poplar Beach to assist with our remaining cleanup, and if none is left, they will help with other parts of the coastline.
  • Informational resources regarding how to treat places of nature were sent out to the community.
  • A class-wide message was sent out detailing our actions and holding us responsible.
