Goats are Baaaack! City Half Moon Bay and Sewer Authority Team to Reduce Fire Fuel Loads on Environmentally Sensitive Lands

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

PRESS RELEASE. From the City of Half Moon Bay Thursday, May 26th, 2022.

It’s that time of year again! With summer approaching, we see our friendly neighborhood herd of goats chomping their way through the Coastside to help reduce wildfire risks. Over the last three years, the City and Sewer Authority Mid-Coastside have contracted with Star Creek Land Stewards to provide goat grazing on City/Authority lands east and west of Highway 1, near Old Bev Cunha Road. The purpose of the grazing is to reduce fire fuel loads on environmentally sensitive lands near existing homes and structures. Given the sensitive nature of these parcels, natural grazing is an appropriate and environmentally beneficial means of fire fuel reduction.

We hope that you take the opportunity to enjoy our four-legged visitors, and also to make your own preparations to reduce wildfire potential in and around your homes and businesses, as well as to prepare for all potential natural disasters. Specifically, we strongly encourage folks that reside near wildfire interface areas to protect your property, family, and neighbors by removing vegetation and other flammable items from the interface areas on your own property.
