PRESS RELEASE. From the offices of California Congressman Kevin Mullin and San Mateo County Supervisor Ray Mueller on April 2nd, 2025.

San Carlos, CA – Congressman Kevin Mullin and San Mateo County Supervisor Ray Mueller are pleased to announce that the FAA has affirmed the San Carlos Airport (SQL) will remain fully staffed with air traffic controllers.

“I’ve been closely tracking the situation at the San Carlos Airport and coordinating with the FAA to make sure that safety and fairness remain paramount in air traffic control staffing decisions. I am pleased to hear that the FAA has been able to resolve contract negotiations and ensure the San Carlos Airport continues to remain fully staffed with highly-skilled air traffic controllers,” said Congressman Kevin Mullin, who represents California’s 15th Congressional District where the San Carlos Airport is based. “Communities surrounding airports and airline travelers across the country rely on air traffic controllers to keep them safe. This news is a relief to many in my district and I will continue to stay engaged with the FAA and local partners to ensure this solution is a lasting one. The San Francisco Bay Area has a high cost of living, and federal agencies need to account for regional differences when evaluating how to establish contracts for critical services.”

“We are heartened to hear that the FAA has reached a deal with our traffic controllers to ensure San Carlos Airport’s control towers are fully staffed for the foreseeable future and the skyways over San Mateo County are safe,” said San Mateo County Supervisor Ray Mueller, whose district includes the San Carlos Airport. “I am deeply grateful to everyone involved for their swift action in restoring long-term air traffic control services, with special thanks to Congressman Mullin for his strong advocacy. This is great news for public safety on the Peninsula, and we will continue to stay vigilant to ensure everything remains on track.”

San Carlos Airport is a vital aviation hub, with over 500 aircraft and 25 aviation-related businesses, not to mention its proximity to San Francisco International Airport (SFO). The airport is a critical training ground for aspiring pilots and without air traffic control services, pilots at SQL would be forced to navigate this complex airspace without professional assistance, potentially leading to dangerous situations that could have catastrophic consequences.
