City of Half Moon Bay to Remove the Half Moon Gateway Sculpture at the South End of Main Street

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...
As construction on the Highway 1 Safety and Operational Improvements – South project has progressed and some of the new fixtures have been installed, including two curved concrete entry structures and landscape improvements, the Half Moon Gateway Sculpture, located at the south end of Main Street and Highway 1, is no longer visible on the approach into town, and as construction continues, the area where the sculpture currently stands will undergo re-development. As part of this process, the city will be removing the sculpture from its current location.
The Half Moon Gateway Sculpture, sculpted by the late artist Sharon Mayes, was dedicated on June 24, 2000, and was a joint commission by the Philanthropic Ventures Foundation, the Main Street Beautification Committee, and the City of Half Moon Bay. As part of the formal deaccessioning (removal) process, City staff have been in communication with the artist’s next-of-kin, the Half Moon Bay History Association, and the Coastal Arts League. Once the sculpture has been removed, it will be safely stored at the City’s corporation yard until its future disposition is determined in compliance with the City’s public art policy, once that policy is completed.
