PRESS RELEASE. From the City of Half Moon Bay on May 28th, 2024.

Half Moon Bay is proud to announce the launch of a new process for “instant permits” for residential solar and battery storage systems.

In an arrangement with the company Symbium, which provides technology to translate complex laws and regulations into simple workflows, Half Moon Bay is please to offer this groundbreaking platform to the community. The Symbium platform verifies code compliance in real time and automates the issuance of solar and energy storage permits, lowering the costs for permit applicants and homeowners and increasing the speed of installing residential solar energy systems in Half Moon Bay.

With the launch of this online platform, not only will Half Moon Bay be in full compliance with California’s SB379 solar permitting mandate, it positions itself as a leader in fostering renewable energy adoption while prioritizing efficiency, safety, and sustainability. This initiative sets the stage for continued growth in the residential solar and battery storage sector, benefitting both the community and the environment.

To apply for a residential solar permit, battery, and energy storage systems please visit Half Moon Bay’s residential solar permit website.

Residential Photovoltaic Related Permits (PV Solar, ESS, Batteries)

To apply for a residential solar permit, battery, and energy storage systems:

  1. Enter the property address. Symbium provides rich data about the property and its permit history.
  2. Click on the Rooftop Solar or Battery Storage Installation button. When you’re ready to apply for an instant solar permit, click on the Rooftop Solar or Battery Storage Installation button in the Property Improvements section.
  3. Answer questions about the proposed solar energy system. Symbium instantly checks for compliance with State and local regulations and provides substantive analysis of why (or why not) the project meets code requirements.
  4. Apply for a permit online. You don’t have to leave Symbium to submit and pay for your permit application. Symbium even automatically verifies your contractor’s and business licenses. Symbium does have a processing fee, separate from the building permit fee.
  5. After we integrate Symbium with our Permit Tracking System, your permit will be issued in real-time, without an in-person visit or email processing. In the meantime, your submittal (already plan checked by Symbium) will be forwarded to our Building Permit Technician, whom in turn will process them as “over the counter” permits. After processing the application in our permit tracking system, applicants will get an invoice and payment instructions.
  6. Be sure that your Business License is up to date or apply for a new one here: https://halfmoonbay.hdlgov.com/
