City of Half Moon Bay is on EPA’s “Green Power Community Top 100” Lists

The Earth Year theme for August is Energy – and we’re very excited to let you know some great news about the City’s and the community’s ongoing efforts to increase green energy usage. Last week, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) posted their newest Green Power Community top 100 lists and Half Moon Bay made the cut!
We ranked at #71 for total annual green power usage at 12,218,561 kWh, and #38 for percentage of green power at 21.8%.
A big thank you and congratulations to all our residents and business who are committed to helping our community achieve our clean energy goals!
We’re able to achieve this in large part because all Half Moon Bay energy customers have access to cleaner energy from Peninsula Clean Energy (PCE). As you know, everyone is automatically enrolled in PCE’s EcoPlus service, which generates energy from 50% renewable sources.
If you’re interested in going even further, PCE can provide you with an even cleaner energy option at their Eco100 tier, which generates energy from 100% renewable sources. All of our City facilities have “opted-up” to the Eco 100 tier. If you want your home to be powered with 100% renewable sources, you can expect an average household to spend $4 – $5 more per month to gain that level of green power.

In honor of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the City of Half Moon Bay is proud to present our Earth Year campaign! Our campaign will feature monthly themes, challenges, events, and online resources that can help you build up your sustainability toolbox throughout the year. AUGUST’S THEME: ENERGY

Historically, energy has been generated from fossil fuels (coal, petroleum, natural gas) which emit greenhouse gas when burned to create energy. GHG emissions are a major contributor to rising temperatures and climate change. Renewable energy comes from sources that regenerate on their own (wind, solar, water) and does not directly produce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Peninsula Clean Energy (PCE) was launched collaboratively by the County of San Mateo and all twenty of its cities. Our goal is to provide electricity that is 100% greenhouse gas free by 2021 and 100% renewable on a 24/7 basis by 2025.

Opt Up to Eco100

All Half Moon Bay residents are automatically enrolled in PCE’s EcoPlus service, which generates energy from 50% renewable sources and 95% GHG free energy. PCE provides an even cleaner energy option that generates energy from 100% renewable sources and provides 100% GHG-free energy.  An average household will spend $4-$5 more a month for Eco100 services. The Bay Area Regional Energy Network (BayREN) is a collaboration of the nine counties that make up the San Francisco Bay Area. Led by the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG), BayREN provides regional-scale energy efficiency programs, services, and resources. BayREN offers programs such as free energy advising, services for renters, rebates, and more. BayREN is an excellent resource to help you navigate more environmentally friendly practices at your business or at home.

Bay Area SunShares is an annual, limited-time program that offers discounts on residential solar and electric vehicles (EVs). The goal of SunShares is to use the power of community to increase clean energy and fight climate change. Open to all residents of the Bay Area and registration will be open from September to November of this year.
