PRESS RELEASE.
The City of Half Moon Bay has an annual contract with the local nonprofit, Abundant Grace Coastside Worker, for litter clean up services as part of their Coastal Clean Team program for individuals that identify as homeless or extremely low income. Participating individuals receive a stipend for the work performed each day and receive job readiness training to acquire the skills necessary for a successful transition to permanent employment.
The program began as a pilot in 2017, providing litter clean up and graffiti removal services at Poplar Beach and has since expanded to include more work opportunities for up to eight individuals, four times a week. The Coastal Clean Team begins their workday at their headquarters on Kelly Avenue, then moves out to clean up Pilarcitos creek to the coastal trail, along with residential streets and the area surrounding Poplar Beach.
The City is happy to report that as of this month, the contracted services with the Coastal Clean Team have been expanded to include areas surrounding Surfer’s Beach and Miramontes Beach.
In 2020, the program collected over 30,000 pounds of trash and provided employment opportunities to over 70 homeless or low-income individuals. In addition to providing this work-readiness programming, Abundant Grace is able to connect participants with other much-needed social services and has successfully transitioned some participants to housing and/or permanent employment opportunities. The City is proud to partner with Abundant Grace to provide these opportunities to homeless and low-income individuals and help keep our coastside clean and beautiful!
