PRESS RELEASE. From Boys and the Girls Club of the Coastside in partnership with Cabrillo Unified School District (CUSD).
The Boys and Girls Club of the Coastside (BGCC) and the Cabrillo Unified School District (CUSD) are partnering to replace the turf and make other upgrades at two district sports facilities this summer – the Half Moon Bay High School Baseball field and the Cunha Soccer Complex. Construction on both projects began this week and aims to be completed by Labor Day.
These improvements are needed to improve the safety of these well-used fields on school property that are also used by our entire community.
Cunha soccer complex improvements include:
- Main soccer field turf will be replaced.
- Asphalt at the north and south ends of the field will be replaced with turf to add additional training areas.
- Soccer cage turf will be replaced.
At the baseball complex, the baseball field turf will be replaced, the bullpen turf will be replaced, and the batting cage turf will also be replaced.
Understandably, the construction will mean both facilities are closed to the public during this work. The inconvenience of the closure is unavoidable due to the scope of this project and the heavy machinery needed to complete it. However, the comprehensive planning that has gone into this has us hopeful that the construction crews will get this done as expeditiously as possible. And the end result will be an improved and safer experience that will benefit our kids and Coastsiders for years to come.
Costs for the projects are being split between BGCC and CUSD. CUSD funds are provided by bond measures approved by voters. Bond funds can only be used for approved capital uses and cannot be used for operational expenses, including teacher salaries. BGCC funds were generously provided by the Waddell family, and no BGCC operational funds or other donation monies will be used.
Questions about the projects can be directed to Drew Gamet at gametd@cabrillo.k12.ca.us.
