PHOTO ESSAY. Submitted by Lisa Fernandez, HMB Yacht Club Manager.
This is one of my favorite pictures.
Normally, the Sea Lions and Harbor Seals do not haul out together.
Pillar Point Harbor by the HMB Yacht Club is the one exception that I know of.
This makes our harbor very unique.
I take pictures of them every day on our docks.
One day, the big Sea Lion boys were climbing over one another and barking loudly.
Little Smiley, the Harbor Seal, is pretty small, but was very content to just hang out right in the middle of all of them.
All the big Sea Lions were very careful not to scare or squish little Smiley.
It shows a kindness that animals practice, that is so often overlooked by humans.
Perhaps we should use Smiley and his friends as role models.
It makes me think of Malcolm Feix, who used to worked Hospitality for the HMBYC.
He would like this, as his motto was, “Show Up and Be Kind”.
Take care and hope this picture makes you smile.
~ It made me smile. I’m sure Malcolm is smiling, too. Smiley and Lisa, thank you!
One day a month or so ago, Lisa saw a harbor seal on the YC’s floating ferry. She knows that’s a bad sign because when they are happy and healthy they hang together on the seal dock a hundred feet away. Solo seal often means sick seal.
Put the Marine Mammal Center’s Rescue number on your cell phone’s speed dial.
This is the number to call:
415-289-SEAL (415-289-7325).
