All Purisima Creek Redwoods Trails Now Open to Hikers Only; Upper Parking Open, Lower Parking Still Closed

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

PRESS RELEASE. From San Mateo County Parks September 2023.

With the reopening of the popular Whittemore Gulch Trail after a 6-month closure due to storm damage, all trails (23 miles!) in Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve are now open to hikers only.

Trails remain temporarily closed to horseback riders until new repairs have time to settle.

Purisima Creek Redwoods was one of the hardest hit preserves due to its steep topography and abundance of springs, creeks and water falls.

Midpen’s expert trail-building and maintenance staff removed downed trees, repaired landslides and made other repairs to make the Whittemore Gulch Trail safe and usable again.

The lower preserve parking area and access on Purisima Creek Road near Half Moon Bay remains temporarily closed until the County of San Mateo completes storm-damage repairs to the county roadway, which are currently in progress.

We appreciate your patience as we work to bring this beloved preserve fully back online for public enjoyment.

  1. Why does the “lower parking lot”–the one most used by coastsiders–remain closed? Purisima Creek Road up to it from Route 1 is perfectly OK. Problems on Higgins should not affect this parking area.
